Yes, you might find it strange, or even unusual but, Jesus did draw to our attention in the Bible about the limitations of our new fashioned technology. All the new technology that let’s you do all sorts of things but it won’t tell you about the coming of the kingdom of God. It won’t save your soul. In fact, Jesus also goes on to tell us it will just be like the days in the past, with Noah and with Lot. So why does Jesus tell us this – and what does He know about technology.
The reason He did this was because first and foremost, He loves us. Jesus, the Son of God, knows all things. He, through His Father, has seen all things – that which has come to pass, and that which has still to come. With regard to technology, he might not have called it an iPad, iPhone, Android, Tablet or laptop – but with the quote from Luke, you get the jist.
Once Jesus was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come. He answered them, “The kingdom of God is not coming with a visible display.
So why, would Jesus reference this in particular. Jesus knew who he was talking to – the Pharisees. Did Jesus hold the Pharisees, in high esteem, as they held themselves within their society?
Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
“How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door to the kingdom from heaven in people’s faces. You don’t go in yourselves, and you don’t allow those who are trying to enter to go in.
“How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You devour widows’ houses and say long prayers to cover it up. Therefore, you will receive greater condemnation!
“How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to make a single convert, and when this happens you make him twice as fit for hell as you are.
“How terrible it will be for you, blind guides! You say, ‘Whoever swears an oath by the sanctuary is excused, but whoever swears an oath by the gold of the sanctuary must keep his oath.’You blind fools! What is more important, the gold or the sanctuary that made the gold holy? Again you say, ‘Whoever swears an oath by the altar is excused, but whoever swears by the gift that is on it must keep his oath.’ You blind men! Which is more important, the gift or the altar that makes the gift holy? Therefore, the one who swears an oath by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. The one who swears an oath by the sanctuary swears by it and by the one who lives there. And the one who swears an oath by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it.
“How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your mint, dill, and cummin, but have neglected the more important matters of the Law: justice, mercy, and faithfulness. These are the things you should have practiced, without neglecting the others. You blind guides! You filter out a gnat, yet swallow a camel!
“How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but on the inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that its outside may also be clean.
“How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs that look beautiful on the outside but inside are full of dead people’s bones and every kind of impurity. In the same way, on the outside you look righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
“How terrible it will be for you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous. Then you say, ‘If we had been living in the days of our ancestors, we would have had no part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ Therefore, you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets. Then finish what your ancestors started!
You snakes, you children of serpents! How can you escape being condemned to hell? “That is why I am sending you prophets, wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will whip in your synagogues and persecute from town to town. As a result, you will be held accountable for all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of the righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.
I tell you with certainty, all these things will happen to those living today.” “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones to death those who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were unwilling! Look! Your house is left abandoned! I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘How blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!'”
Well, Jesus is very clear and straightforward with his message to the Pharisees and the scribes, of his day and to the same people of our day. Unlike Pope Francis, Jesus tells the people, what they must do and not do, to enter the kingdom of heaven. He doesn’t enter into chaos creationism like Francis. Jesus loves us all and tells us what we must do.
Stick your head in technology day in, day out and afford no time for Jesus – the kingdom of heaven will not appear on your mobile phone, tablet or laptop display. It will, in fact, pass you by.(read on)
Hypocrite – does the cap fit? Are you shutting the door to the kingdom of heaven to other people – your children? friends? partners?
Are you allowing yourself to be deceived by another way of life by being lazy, not following the commandments in spirit and truth? Do you neglect justice, mercy and faithfulness? Are you full of greed and self-indulgence? Then there’s looking righteous but filled with dead people’s bones, every kind of impurity, hypocrisy and lawlessness.
I’m a sinner – I need Jesus and His forgiveness. What about you?
In conclusion Jesus tells us what it will be like when He returns
Then Jesus told the disciples,
“The time will come during which you will long to see one of these days when the Son of Man is with you, but you will not see it. People will say to you, ‘Look! There he is!’ or ‘Look! Here he is!’ But don’t go and chase after him. Because just as lightning flashes and shines from one end of the sky to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his time. But first he must suffer a great deal and be rejected by those living today.”
Just as it was in Noah’s time, so it will be in the days of the Son of Man. People were eating, drinking, marrying, and being given in marriage right up to the day when Noah went into the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed all of them.
So it was in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. But on the day when Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed all of them.
The day when the Son of Man is revealed will be like that.
